A Forbes article "Nokia-Microsoft partnership not working"...

Surprise, surprise. Nokia's partnership with Microsoft is definitely a huge mistake, Microsoft is just exploiting them to further expand the Windows Phone 7 market share. By letting go of Symbian, Nokia has freely given away the market share that Symbian held to the rest of the competitors. Symbian could have been much successful as compared to the Windows Phone 7, of course that will take time and money, which Nokia is unwilling to risk at this point of time.

Sadly, the partnership that they participated with the intent to maintain their hold on the smartphone market is not working out as expected. The fact is that iOS and the Android platform are much popular as opposed to the likes of the Windows Phone 7. Even if they could not hold on to Symbian, a better bet will be to use Android due to its popularity.

Adding on to that, the release of Lumia comes a little late. The market is already filled with the likes of iPhone4S, GalaxySII, and Lumia is unable to stand out from the crowd. In my opinion, what consumers would like is a phone that is slim, yet powerful, and affordable, which Lumia just barely achieves.

Right now, if Nokia can come up with a phone that competes with the current top dogs, and run an aggressive advertisement campaign then they will stand a chance of catching back up with the current industry.
